Job Description

Position Purpose:

Provides programming expertise to develop, create, or modify computer applications in one or more specialized phase of applications programming to support members utilizing products. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs, codes, modifies, and develops programs related to assigned projects to meet the business needs and optimize operational efficiencies.  Tests and debugs work to correct errors, improve performance and/or adapt to hardware requirements. 

  • Analyzes the needs of the end user and provides user oriented, cost-effective solutions which interface with existing applications. Determines feasibility, cost, time frame, and additional alternatives to meet the user need.   Identifies potential impact and outcomes of changes to user and proactively communicates risks, alternatives and solutions.

  • Converts project specifications and statements of problems and procedures for coding into business applications.

  • Develops and writes computer programs to store, locate, and retrieve specific documents, data, and information.  Maintains assignment documentation for work both completed and in-process. 

  • Communicates (verbal and written) design specifications and programming progress throughout the development cycle with the project manager. 

  • Acts as a source of direction, training, and guidance for less experienced staff.  Serves as a role model to others. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Job Requirements

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Associates’ degree from an accredited college/university in computer programming with  a minimum of two years experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
    • Demonstrated proficiency with programming languages and technologies such as COBOL, AS400/iSeries, CL, XML, JAVA, JSP, SQL, Java script, HTML and DB2 and SQL Databases. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office products including Word and Excel.
    • Demonstrated ability to understand insurance terminology.  Experience programming for property-casualty or reinsurance carrier preferred.
    • Ability to think logically and to continually use personal judgment, experience, known facts and figures to make decisions and deal with problems.  Analyzes data and information to determine best solution and impact for company and end user. 
    • Possesses sound analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.  Programming may be complex in nature and modifications may impact more than one program or application.   Must have ability to think creatively and incorporate current technical solutions into outcome. 
    • Ability to manage and set priorities for multiple and/or conflicting projects.  Must be flexible to adjust priorities as business needs change.
    • Recognizes processing/programming inefficiencies and proactively recommends improvements while maintaining cost effectiveness.  
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and understand the impact postponing or delays has on others inside and outside division.
    • Demonstrates enthusiasm and commitment towards work assignment by showing initiative and assisting team members with solutions based suggestions and assistance. 
    • Demonstrates ability to communicate in both oral and written fashion to both technical and non-technical personnel.
    • Ability to work in a harmonious manner with co-employees, customers, agents and supervisor.
    • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
    • Ability to maintain regular and predictable schedule.
