Summary:         The purpose of the Activity Assistant is to assist the Activities Director with the planning, coordinating, training, administering, and interpreting of the activities and social programs for the facility, in compliance with state and federal standards, rules, and regulations, and center policies and procedures.


  • Integrate activities with other services and care provided for the residents

  • Assist Activities Director with those activities that will provide entertainment,

    communication, exercise, relaxation, and expression of creative talents.

  • Assist with programs designed to fulfill basic psychological and spiritual needs of the residents as ordered by the attending physicians

  • Assist with the volunteer services program

  • Encourage hobbies and craft activities among residents in groups or individually, in workrooms, recreational areas, or resident rooms

  • Encourage, but do not force, residents to participate in any program or activity (religious or recreational)

  • Ascertain from the physician’s orders any limitations that the resident may have in participating in activities

  • Encourage communication among residents

  • Assist in planning parties, games, and encourage residents to assist in planning (i.e., making decorations for holidays and special occasions, wrapping gifts, planning parties, etc.)  (Be familiar with dietary restrictions)

  • Provide in room activities to residents unable to leave their room

  • Assist residents in making telephone calls to friends and families when needed

  • Assist in care plans as requested by the Activities Director

  • Distribute mail to residents and read it to those who otherwise cannot read

  • Maintain supplies, equipment, and activity space

  • Assure that activity programs address and contain empowerment, maintenance, and supportive activities

  • Assist in outings, transportation, and shopping for residents

  • Assist residents with family members, visitors, and volunteers

  • Assist residents to and from activities

  • Ensure that the facility is following state and federal regulations pertaining to activities

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Job Requirements



    • High school diploma or equivalent

    • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions



    • Maintains the confidentiality of resident’s information

    • Honor resident’s personal and property rights

    • Understands all rights afforded to residents and acts accordingly



    • Maintains assigned work areas in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner

    • Knowledgeable of fire safety and disaster plans

    • Knows location and proper use of fire extinguishers

    • Understands and practices Standard/Universal Precautions with all residents

    • Reports all hazardous situations and broken equipment to the Administrator or designee




    • Follows established safety precautions when performing tasks and when using equipment and supplies

    • Clean equipment properly after use

    • Keeps appropriate individuals informed of supply needs

    The physical demands of this position include lifting up to 50 pounds, standing on feet, bending, stooping, reaching, repetitive motion/movement, pushing and pulling.
