You must meet the following qualifications:
Experience. A minimum of eight years’ experience in a production coding environment in multiple specialties in the outpatient setting (ambulatory care centers) coding ambulatory procedures within the last five years is required or a minimum of two years if that experience was in a military treatment facility. Ancillary specialties (PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition, etc.) do not count as qualifying experience. Additionally, coding, auditing and training exclusively for specialties such as home health, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation care will not be considered as qualifying experience. Coding experience limited to making codes conform to specific payer requirements for the business office (insurance billing, accounts receivable) is not a qualifying factor.
The following are recognized certifications:
1. Associate's degree in Health Information Management -OR- University Certificate in Medical Coding -OR- at least 20 quarter or 30 semester hours of college credit including relevant course work such as anatomy.physiology, medical terminology, health information management and/or pharmacology.
