About the job:

TAS Commercial Concrete Construction has an immediate opening for a Director of Safety, in Houston, TX.  This position is accountable for envisioning, planning and documenting the Company’s safety plan, including all related manuals, policies and procedures; and (b) providing leadership, direction, implementation and best practice insight for programs. The incumbent will be responsible for Employee Safety, Accident Prevention, Asset Protection, Safety Training & Orientation, OSHA Regulatory Compliance, Workers Compensation, Safety Audits, Loss Prevention and Safety Policies & Procedures for the Company’s operations.      

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Works with the EVP, Sr VP Operations, and Senior Management to establish and achieve the company’s safety goals and objectives.
  • Develops and implements a multi-year Safety strategy and plan to ensure that safe work practices and related programs are successfully adopted and implemented that can result in improved performance metrics.
  • Provides leadership and direction to Safety Managers and their safety teams to ensure success in achieving their safe work objectives at their respective locations.
  • Cultivates effective working relationships with key operations and management personnel to obtain needed support and buy-in to safety initiatives, policies and programs.
  • Oversees design and implementation of workplace safety programs and practices designed to ensure the health and safety of all employees at job site and work locations.
  • Ensures that an effective and comprehensive new employee Safety orientation   program is in place at all Company locations to educate new and existing employees on safe work practices and procedures that can minimize workplace safety risks.     
  • Leads in the development of Safety initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • Analyzes and assesses the effectiveness of the Company’s Safety performance through metrics and standards utilized by OSHA and general industry: and develops and implements corrective and preventive actions and programs in areas requiring improvement.
  • Provides advice and counsel to Senior Leadership and Safety Managers to improve and enhance safety performance at all Company locations and serves as a technical resource to Safety Department personnel at all Company locations.
  • Writes and implements Safety policies and procedures to ensure that guidelines are in place that will contribute to a safe workplace for Company employees.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to local management regarding potential workplace safety risks and liabilities at Company work locations. 
  • Works with key personnel in Operations, Education Department and other department functions to develop, communicate, and provide on-going and refresher training with respect to safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Works with the Director of Risk Management and OGH Director of HS&E to address handling of legal claims and lawsuits. 
  • Oversees administration of worker’s compensation insurance program for all TAS subsidiaries and divisions.
  • Responsible to insure claims or incidents are properly reported to TAS Management, the Director of Risk Management, OGH Director HS&E, respective broker contact, underwriter or claims adjustor.
  • Coordinates with local HS&E and Human Resources personnel to manage employee injury cases and to expedite employee return-to-work scenarios, including serving as primary contact for local incidents.
  • All employees, current and former, must maintain confidentiality by not disclosing to others any confidential, proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.
  • Responsible and accountable for incumbent’s own personal safety.
  • Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any others incumbent encounters.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and Company policies and procedures, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
  • Reports violations of applicable laws, regulations or Company policies and procedures promptly, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
  • Job Requirements

    Position Requirements:

    A minimum of 10 years management experience in employee safety and accident prevention with major emphasis in a structural and light commercial concrete construction environment is required with a B.S. Degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, or related discipline preferred. The successful candidate must have a broad working knowledge of Safe Work Practices, Accident Prevention, OSHA Regulatory Compliance, Workers Compensation, Asset Protection, Safety Audit & Inspection, Loss Prevention Programs, and Safety Training. Prior concrete construction experience is highly preferred.  This individual must also possess training skills and be able to effectively interface and communicate with employees at all levels.   

    Incumbents must also have to 1) identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, 2) develop and foster a positive work environment at all levels, and 3) resolve conflicts through problem resolution skills.
