Immediate Opening for Full-Time Team Leader

Program Overview:

Lakeside Academy, located approximately 15 miles west of Wichita in Goddard, KS, is a residential treatment center that provides programming for boys ages 13 and older in the Kansas Department of Children and Family custody.  With a licensed capacity of 45 residents. Residents can participate if needed in a certified, outpatient substance abuse treatment program, including substance abuse assessment and individual and group counseling along with outpatient individual, group and family counseling, sex offender treatment and psychiatric services. The Lakeside Academy environment focuses on behavioral change through the establishment of a positive peer culture and the intervention of negative behavior.

Position Overview:

The Team Leader provides direct supervision to Teacher Counselors, and coordination of the therapeutic program.  The Team Leader is responsible for ensuring that the activities of the therapeutic program operate according to established policy and procedure systems and processes.  The Team Leader is responsible to maintain an organized, structured, therapeutic program and ensure active treatment.  The primary function of the Team Leader is to maintain the safety and well-being of the residents under the supervision of the Teacher Counselors.  The Team Leader facilitates the operation of the residential units and provides guidance and supervision to Teacher Counselors responsible for direct supervision to the residents. 

Job Duties:

  • Interview, Train, and Support Teacher Counselors

  • Conduct screening interview of Teacher Counselors

  • Monitor reference checks made by Human Resource

  • Participate in the hiring process of Teacher Counselors

  • Assist with the initial orientation for new staff

  • Schedule in-services for staff

  • Observe staff interaction with residents to provide feedback for staff improvement.  Conduct/oversee performance evaluations identifying staff training needs and establishing goals for performance improvement.

  • Supervise Teacher Counselors

  • Provide supervision to Teacher Counselors to ensure quality delivery of services.

  • Participate in the evaluation of staff performance process with Group Living Director.

  • Coordinate Staffing

  • Complete staffing schedule for all Teacher Counselors

  • Ensure appropriate staffing ratios at all times

  • Team Leaders will rotate being on call.  During the time the Team Leader is on call he/she is required to carry a cell phone on him/her at all times and respond to the messages within 60 minutes.

  • Review documentation for accuracy and completeness.  Documentation includes:

  • Progress Notes

  • Incident Reports

  • Restraint Reports

  • Precautions Records

  • Shift Reports

  • Unit Programming

  • The Team Leader will ensure all groups are conducted according to the posted activity schedule.

  • All groups conducted will be documented with the Group Contact form.


  • Behavior Management System

  • The Team Leader will ensure the behavior management system is implemented and followed according to the written policies governing the program.

  • The Team Leader will ensure each youth is prepared and informed of the Norm’s, Level’s, and Force Field classifications.

  • The Team Leader will ensure the Teacher/Counselors are prepared and informed of the Norm’s, Level’s, and Force Field classifications.

  • Critical Incident Reporting

  • The Team Lead will understand the threshold between CIR versus NON-CIR reporting requirements.

  • TL’s through the guidance of the GLD will ensure timelines are met according to policy and the regulations of licensing authorities.

  • TL’s will immediate notify the GLD of all CIR’s after ascertaining the facts of the incident.

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.

  • Facilitate the development of behavior interventions to be implemented as a part of the resident’s treatment goals.

  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings in regards to resident’s ratings and staffing needs. 

  • Assist in the development of crisis intervention plans to be implemented when youth are in crisis.

  • Serve as a member of the management team of Lakeside Academy.  Provide input into facility operations and maintain accountability for the therapeutic program.

  • Evaluate residents behavior to determine level of supervision necessary to maintain resident’s and others safety.

  • Effectively communicate any problems/areas of concern to staff members providing direct supervision to the resident.

  • Serve as a member of the management team of Lakeside Academy.  Provide input into facility operations and maintain accountability for the Performance Improvement Program and Quality management.

  • Maintain quality codes of conduct and professionalism, i.e. strong work ethic, role modeling and commitment to improving quality of life to the youth in care.

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, both orally and through documentation.

  • Participate in facility-wide Quality Improvement initiatives.

  • Attend staff / unit meetings to discuss facility and program operations and to receive facility communications.

  • Attend all mandatory and scheduled training.

  • Request time off in advance according to policy. 

  • Minimal and legitimate requests for time off due to illness.

  • Execute all emergency procedures according to the facility policies and procedures.

  • Complete all documentation tasks related to the position.  All documentation should be timely and accurate.

  • Uphold professional standards of treatment and the mission of Lakeside Academy in delivering services to youth.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of the residents and the company and abide by all regulations pertaining to confidentiality including HIPAA. 

  • Maintain a safe secure therapeutic environment.

  • All other duties as assigned by Supervisor.


    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences and/or equivalent experience is required.

    • Must possess two years of experience working in a residential setting.

    • Basic computer skills, including usage of email, Internet Explorer, and print documents.
