Plant Manager – Food Industry



Job Summary: 

The Plant Manager oversees the successful operation of the Plant with responsibility for development, implementation and management of effective operational goals, focusing on efficiencies, effectiveness, and financial objectives, while ensuring that customers both external & internal are continuously receiving quality products & service, at the same time as maintaining a safe, effective and harmonious work environment.


Essential Functions and Duties:


o   Effectively plans, schedules, coordinates and directs all plant operations to provide the highest quality products and services to our internal and external customers, by ensuring compliance to Quality Policies / Procedures & Dept. / Site procedures, while maintaining budget targets for costs and standards of performance

o   Promptly reports all food safety and/or quality issues to direct supervisor and QA department for corrective actions

o   Ensures quality control programs within the Industry Plant are followed to assure conformity with quality and sanitation standards as required by company and regulatory agencies

o   Maintains the plant in an “unannounced inspection" ready condition.

o   Ensures that all non-employees, including but not limited to, temporary staff, visitors, vendors, etc.) within the plant comply with company procedures, GMP’s & SOP’s

o   Develops and implements effective SOP’s. Ensures that SOP’s are followed

o   Supports and directs location continuous improvement programs.

o   Maintains working knowledge and skill in operating equipment utilized under his/her supervision with a focus on Continuous Improvement

o   Assures compliance with established company recording forms and data reporting documents and takes corrective action concerning deficiencies

o   Assists with investigating customer complaints, food safety, and/or quality issues and initiate corrective / preventative actions

o   Understands, follows, and enforces all policies, procedures, and programs.

o   Ensures that all sanitation activities are completed in the plant including equipment inspections and equipment teardowns.


Staff Management

o   Leads staff to deliver and exceed performance metrics in areas of safety, quality, customer, service, costs, inventory management and production

o   Hires, trains and motivates, monitors and evaluates performance of plant employees

o   Ensures that all workstations are staffed with competent well trained employees

o   Ensures suitable cross training to provide succession planning.

o   Continually and critically evaluates all work activities as a basis for change or improvement which will eliminate potential safety hazards, increase productivity or reduce costs

o   Continues to improve managerial abilities in addition to improving subordinates’ skills and capabilities

o   Assists the COO in all aspects of employee relations and promote company philosophy and objectives. While treating employees & coworkers with respect.



o   Fosters a climate of Safety, Urgency, Accuracy and Timeliness

o   Ensures employees follow established safety procedures including body mechanics, ergonomics and Good Manufacturing Practices when performing duties in production depts. & counsels, records, and disciplines as necessary

o   Investigates accidents/injuries, completing all necessary documents and ensuring effective corrective action is taken

o   Assures all department employees attend training in their job and safety requirements as established by  guidelines


Financial Management

o   Develops and implements financial and non-financial objectives for the location including the annual budget, financial forecasts and operating plans

o   Ensures all departments perform within budgeted operating standards

o   Prepares the Industry Plant’s operating and capital budget, and forecast needs of the Plant

o   Maintains predetermined finished inventory levels. Coordinates bulk & packaging requirements with Packaging & Purchasing depts. and the Purchasing dept. to meet targeted production schedules

o   Monitors plant employee payroll for accuracy

o   Manages dept. assets to assure maximum and most efficient usage for production


o   Serves as an active member of Quality Assurance Committee and the COI Safety Committee

o   Assists the VP of Operations with strategic initiatives and goal attainment. Establishes plant initiatives & goals to support Divisional objectives

o   Through creative thinking, generates and presents new ideas for products, methods and procedures

o   Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required. Must be fluent in both languages
  • Must have knowledge of Safety Compliance
  • Knowledge of industry regulatory agencies/standards (I.e. OSHA, GMP’s, and Quality and Food Safety programs)
  • Must have demonstrated working knowledge of high speed commodity packaging processes with a minimum of 3 yrs. experience in a manufacturing role in the commodity packaging industry
  • Must have 5+ years of Plant Management experience, with demonstrated knowledge in financial and organizational ability
  • Must be able to work with team members at all levels within the organization
  • Must possess leadership ability and team building skills to effectively supervise employees and to interact with all levels of management
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and effective communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal)
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods, principles and changes to existing practices that come from active participation in continual process improvement
  • Advanced computer skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Additional experience in warehouse/material handling and supply chain is preferred
