Academic Advisors, VSS are responsible for assisting career and technical education (CTE) students in the development of educational, career and transfer plans through the assimilation of information from a variety of sources, course selection, interpretation of academic rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and intervention and referral to appropriate services and resources. VSS academic advisors are expected to stay current with advising models and to employ a variety of strategies as they work to assist students in accomplishing their goals. VSS academic advisors are assigned a CTE student caseload and must regularly communicate with targeted CTE student groups and act as a liaison to AACC departments. The advisor in this position will participate in collaborative efforts related to other engagement and high impact practices on campus and increase retention and guided pathways to completion of all CTE students. The VSS advisor will participate in success strategies designed to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity, and sustained academic achievement. Last, the expectation for this position is for the advisor to support CTE student academic and career momentum as they progress toward meaningful careers and postsecondary credentials and to support the strategies of the Perkins VSS

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist CTE students at all AACC locations in all phases of academic advising and career planning, and in the skills needed to develop an educational plan, leading to a guided pathway to completion.
  • Provide detailed information to CTE students concerning program requirements, transfer requirements, curriculum choice, course selection, registration procedures, AACC policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Ensure that A.A.S. degree and certificate seeking CTE students with developmental requirements begin all required developmental course sequences in their first term and continue in that sequence to facilitate timely goal completion.
  • Meet with CTE students experiencing academic challenges to help acquaint them with available college support services and resources, draft student success contracts, and make referrals as needed.
  • Update each CTE student's educational plan screen at the conclusion of each session and make appropriate advising notes.
  • Assist CTE students with petitions requesting exceptions to college policy.
  • Use technology to view, sort, and monitor CTE student caseloads, communicate and foster professional relationships with CTE students, evaluate CTE student records for program completion, and teach CTE students about online services through MyAACC.
  • Plan and conduct academic skills workshops and group advising sessions for CTE students.
  • Participate in all planned activities as detailed on the current year's strategy worksheets.
  • Contribute to weekly, monthly and annual reports, attend staff meetings and training sessions, work in concert and cooperation with other college departments, and serve on appropriate committees.
  • Participate in college governance by serving on appropriate committees.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in engagement and high impact practices such as new student orientation, student success course, supplemental instruction, and tutoring to name a few.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director with identifying strategies to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity of outcomes.
  • Assist/accompany counselors responding to crisis situations, as requested.
  • Immediately report concerns about students to the Director.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Assistant Director.

  • Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in higher education, counseling, education or a related field is required.
  • Experience advising students.
  • Working knowledge of student development theories and their applicability to student success strategies and co-curricular programming.
  • Knowledge of current student engagement and high impact practices designed for community colleges.
  • Ability to work at all AACC locations during regular operating hours, therefore occasional travel is required. Evening and Saturday hours may be required.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all student groups, faculty, administrators, professional and support staff, and the public.
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse setting.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and ability to master student information systems.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three or more years full time experience advising community college students.
  • Experience in a Maryland Community College advising office.
  • Experience with online/virtual advising.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds
