Job Description Job Description

Job Objective: The Licensed Vocational Nurse provides quality care to patients in the perianesthesia setting under the supervision of a registered nurse.  The LVN will demonstrate a strong ability to assist in preparing the patient for the surgical and/or procedural experience.  The LVN will strive to maintain a steady level of productivity and provide care that reflects the mission, goals, and ethics of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Scope of Practice
    1. Functions within the scope of LVN practice as outlined by the California State board of Vocational Nursing 
  2.  Nursing Process Under a Team based Model of Care
    1. Assists the Registered Nurse in direct patient care
    2. Documents observations and care provided in the patient’s medical record
    3.  Adheres to policies and procedures in providing care and treatments, including but not limited to the following:
      1. Medication Administration
      2. Treatment Modalities
      3. Blood Draws for laboratory testing
      4. Assisting with treatments
  3.  Pre-Op Phase
    1.  Under supervision of registered nurse prepares and assess patients for procedures/surgery per department policies under the ASPAN guidelines
    2. Provides patient and family centered education
    3. Proactively contacts appropriate physician(s) with abnormal diagnostic test results and/or patient issues.
    4. Completes and reviews all relevant documentation.
    5. Actively keeps the team informed of diagnostic results

     1. During idle times, may be assigned to assist the IV team, in other areas of the Hospital

     2. Other duties as assigned by the Manager and/or Charge RN.

Non-Essential Duties:

              1.  Attends annual competencies and successfully completes them.

              2.  Reads and responds in a timely manner to email communications

              3.  Assist in performance improvement initiatives

  • ASPAN standards

  • Pain and comfort management of the perianesthesia patient
  • Knowledge of evidenced based processes regarding efficient and effective patient flow in the perianesthesia setting.
  • Knowledge and ability to practice as defined by Vocational Nursing Practice Act
  • Demonstrates knowledge of legal and regulatory aspects of care, knowledge of legal documents pertinent to unit.

    Education and Experience:

    Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current nurse licensure in the state of California 
  • Experience

  • 2 years nursing experience in acute care setting preferred
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Licensed Vocational Nurse for State of California
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification –Preferred
  • Intravenous Therapy Certification

  • Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Mandatory weekend and holiday rotations
  • Required to take call shifts per department policy
