Job Description

TEGNA Inc. is seeking a Payroll Specialist to process payroll for TEGNA. Our ideal candidate will have experience with UltiPro, although candidates with similar Payroll system experience will be considered.


Responsibilities:

  • Process bi-weekly disbursement of multi-state payroll, including garnishments, benefits, and taxes to 5,000+ U.S. based employees.
  • Maintain documentation of paycycle reviews/audits.
  • Stay up to date on regulations affecting payroll, payroll tax, withholding orders and garnishments.
  • Review and resolve bank issues daily (ACH returns/rejects, check exceptions).
  • Partner with HR to ensure setup of accurate payroll and benefit deductions.
  • Calculate and process retroactive pay adjustments.
  • Ensure all payroll processes are documented and up-to-date with any enhancements and improvements.
  • Generate off-cycle payrolls (i.e stock award/bonus) and manual checks.
  • Submit garnishment orders to our 3rdparty vendor for processing via case management software, track cases to resolution.
  • Submit tax notices, rate changes to our 3rd party vendor for processing via case management software, track cases to resolution.
  • Coordinate the year-end process to ensure timely issuance of accurate Form W-2s
  • Assist manager with researching tax issues and preparing W-2c's as needed.
  • Ensure that all "Additional Wages" are identified and appropriately added to payroll system (i.e. imputed income, relocation expenses).
  • Respond timely and professionally to employee inquiries.
  • Establish and maintain good professional relations with field payroll processors and other Finance, HR, and IT teams that partner with payroll.


  • Requirements:

  • CPP certification preferred
  • 3-5 years payroll processing experience
  • Extensive knowledge of processing payroll in a sophisticated ERP system; ideal candidate will have experience processing payroll with UltiPro / Ultimate Software
  • Proficiency with MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Working experience with payroll taxes at the federal, state and local levels
  • Working experience with garnishment processing
  • Proven attention to detail, good organizational and prioritizing skills and ability to multi-task and work in a rapidly expanding and changing environment
  • Ability to be self-motivated and proactive
  • Collaborative approach and experience working well with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written); strong interpersonal skills
