Job Description Overview

Our Nursing Assistant performs basic and specialized nursing care function under the direction of a licensed nurse. Nursing duties and tasks are performed in accordance with local and regulatory policies and procedures. The Nursing Assistant is a nursing partner who implements patient care activities with the assistance of other members of the health care team and custody officers in the correctional setting. After completion of a general orientation to medical-surgical and psychiatric patient care areas floats between the units to ensure adequate nursing staff for patient care areas.


Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

 Completion of training course for Nursing Assistants.

 

Experience:

Work requires level of knowledge of basic patient care methods, procedures, and techniques.

 Must be able to pass and maintain clearance for a Public Trust Position, if working with specific patients.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

Current, State of South Carolina certification is required.

 Basic life support certification required.


Responsibilities

Assisting patients with eating, bathing, dressing, toileting and all other activities of daily living (ADLs) each shift. Documents appropriate notes that reflect patient care activities.

                                                                   

Obtain and record all parameters of vital signs to include height and weight. Accurate intake and output is recorded as ordered and reported to the licensed nurse.

 

Collects, reports and documents patient data and information accurately and in a timely manner.

 

Reports abnormal vital signs are reported to the licensed nurse immediately. Record as instructed based on findings.

 

Completes all assigned tasks and assists other team members in caring for patients.

 

Attends nursing huddles, staff meetings and other collaborative meetings as directed.

 

Notifies the registered nurse of any patient/family concerns or comments.

 

Participates in orientation of new staff members to the unit.

 

Floats to patient care areas as directed by the nursing supervisor.

 

Organizes and prioritizes work flow to ensure completion of all duties as assigned. Signs off on the shift assignment sheet to indicate completion of duty.

Demonstrates professional behavior and responsibility for actions in the work place refraining from the use of profane language and aggressive actions toward patients and other staff members.

 

Use and tracks medical supplies and equipment efficiently. Checks for and dispositions expired medical items.

 

Ensures that medical equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately after each use.  

Completion of initial, annual and other training as required to remain proficient in duty performance and nursing activities. Maintains recurring competencies as directed.

 

Accurately chart and report observations of physical signs, symptoms and behavioral changes. Must accurately record patient’s height and weight upon admission and as indicated.

 

Basic knowledge of nursing procedures.

 

Maintains confidentiality of patient and employee information and records. Completes HIPAA training.

 

Demonstrates loyalty and commitment to the organization.

 

Reports to work as scheduled and follows policies and procedures when unable to report as scheduled.

 

Understand that safe and compassionate patient care is a top priority.

 

Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervising nurse.

 

Notifies the nurse of any patient issues or concerns.
