Job Summary:

Company Spine, a leading medical device manufacturer, is seeking a Vice President of Research & Development to join our team. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The VP of R&D is responsible for driving innovation and invention for the Global Spine Division, specifically:

  • Directs the new product development and post-market engineering functions for ZB Spine; ensuring the development and execution of all new projects are delivered on schedule and on target.
  • Provides strategic leadership and direction to the organization to drive competitive advantage and enable markets on a global basis to realize significant market share growth.
  • Builds long-term strategic plans, in partnership with the Marketing and Sales, which outlines actionable development goals for all the regions and integrates the efforts of the global brand management operation.
  • Motivates and inspires the managers and employees in the R&D department to commit to and execute against stretch targets.
  • Utilizes knowledge of competition, orthopedic market, and product potential to seek out and gain new business opportunities.

    Expected Areas of Competence:

  • Strong business focus and orientation with history of successfully managing orthopedic, preferably spine, device development processes and cross-functional teams. Globally recognized as the business leader for the particular business unit both inside and in the marketplace with surgeons and business leaders.
  • Sets a successful direction by establishing a clear and compelling vision. Instills a sense of urgency and motivates engineers to meet deadlines and budgets.  Sets high expectations and holds others and self-accountable for the results expected.
  • Directs regular review of markets and products to identify trends and promising opportunities.
  • Foresees how decisions may impact the financial state of the rest of the organization; effectively planning and managing to budgets.
  • Continuously refines work processes and suggests reallocation of resources to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of development.
  • Understands how ideas are converted into successful development and commercialization programs and continuously works to improve these processes and impact profitability and grow share.
  • Education/Experience Requirements:

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering required, MBA or work on an MBA is preferred plus 15+ years commercialization experience in medical devices or healthcare required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Up to 50%
