LABORATORY SERVICES

TITLE: LABORATORY SERVICES DIRECTOR

JOB OVERVIEW: Director has the responsibility for directing the management operations and administrative duties of the departments within the laboratory. 

ROLE: See generic criteria for Director 

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Clinical and Anatomical Pathology Lab 

RESPONSIBLE TO: ADMINISTRATOR 

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Masters degree from an accredited college or university with a Medical Technologist ASCP OR NCA certification.

  2. Minimum of 3 years management experience required.

  3. Minimum of 5 years Clinical Laboratory experience preferred.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Capable of comprehending, executing and acting within scope of practice.

  2. Exceptional communication skills in working with co-workers, clients and Medical Staff.

  3. Demonstrates effective leadership and interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently in a diverse population.

  4. Demonstrates good decision making and problem solving skills.

  5. Flexibility, adaptability and the balance to keep organized and positive in a climate of constant change.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

B. Unique Job Functions:

  • Demonstrates competency with new technological developments and ways these developments might be applied to enhance Laboratory Services.

  • Develops and implement plans for the incorporation of new services in the laboratory and at the Point of Care.

  • Assures representation of the Lab at the Quality Improvement Committee and oversees quality management for the lab.

  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory bodies for the laboratory across the system.

  • Maintains responsibility for Service-wide quality of lab services across the system.

  • Ensures systems for ongoing communication for staff on all hospital and Out-Reach issues are effective so staff are aware of issues/policies.

  • Maintains accountability for Human Resource management to include personnel and labor relations management.

  • Prepares and manages within operating and capital budget.

  • Ensures that proper billing is captured and all regulatory requirements are being followed.

  • Manages supplies/inventory to ensure that products are available and system in place to monitor usage.

  • Ensures that Lab safety policies and procedures are in place and being followed.

  • Utilizes statistical, utilization and management reports to support best practices.

  • Ensures that the Lab Services are promoted to our customers and embodies customer service philosophy through an on-going Service Monitoring Program.

  • Provides direct supervision to subordinates via individual and group meetings.

  • Maintains open communication process for all staff by providing reasonable access through scheduled/unscheduled meetings and walking through the departments.

  • Formulates new strategies/innovations, which promote decreased cost and increased volume and service.

  • Develops opportunities for new business related to service area.
