Job Description

Position Summary

Performs, organizes, coordinates and supervises a variety of analytical laboratory testing activities at the Cooperative Energy generating facilities; assures compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.

Essential Duties and Requirements:

  • Conducts or coordinates with lab technicians a variety of analytical lab tests in compliance with standard testing methods, procedures and regulations; implements quality control specifications; and ensures that the most appropriate laboratory methods are used in monitoring operations.
  • Performs, interprets, evaluates and records standard laboratory tests on boiler water, feedwater, cooling water, de-mineralization process and wastewater; performs calculations as needed and records results; notifies appropriate personnel of abnormal or critical results and significant changes in lab results and assists in investigating operational problems.
  • Monitors performance of water treatment equipment.
  • Stays abreast of NPDES permit conditions for Cooperative Energy facilities.
  • Maintains orderly records of all monitoring and recordkeeping requirements as specified by NPDES permits for assigned facilities.
  • Monitors plant discharge systems and assists in maintaining emissions to environment within acceptable limits.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports.
  • Performs standardized physical and chemical tests on plant water systems, waste materials, and plant wastewater discharge.
  • Maintains or oversees the calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments, demineralizer equipment, condensate polisher, chemical feed pumps, etc.
  • Maintains bulk chemical and laboratory supplies inventory.
  • Trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; prioritizes, schedules, and assigns work to assigned laboratory personnel; insures completion of work in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a safety conscious atmosphere by being aware of potential hazards of jobs done in the lab and plant; participates in job training and safety meetings.
  • Stays abreast of latest technological advances in the field; reads and remains current on new method development procedures and validation.
  • Keeps informed of Cooperative Energy policies and procedures; administers/complies with the same and interprets same to assigned personnel.
  • Directs and performs lab hygiene test according to established guidelines.
  • Manages the cataloging and storage of plant wastes and facilitates waste disposal.

    Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree Chemical Engineering Or
  • Bachelor's Degree Chemistry
  •  

    Experience:

  • 5 years Laboratory Analysis Experience in an Industrial, Chemical or Power Plant Environment with Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
  •  

    Certification and Licensures:

  • Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification. Required

  • Knowledge of lab procedures for water testing, approved chemical analysis methods, instrument calibration, water treatment programs, and required testing and reporting.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting analytical procedures.
  • Skilled in recognizing atypical data and applying judgment to data interpretation.
  • Skilled in manipulating and operating laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in events, processes and priorities.
  • Ability to present oral and written reports of work performed.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively work with others in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to plan, assign, instruct and direct work responsibilities of others.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and approved chemical disposal practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems used by the lab.
  • Strong analytical and logical reasoning ability.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
