About the Opportunity

This position can be filled in Akron, OH or Fairmont, WV.

The EMS Power Network Analysis (PNA) Engineer works at FirstEnergy's Control Center with a team of analysts and engineers in support of the Energy Management System. The system is a critical, real-time, 7x24 application that controls, monitors, and models the flow of power across the FirstEnergy transmission system and interconnections.

Representative duties include:

  • Providing primary maintenance and support of the EMS network application toolset (network model, state estimator, and contingency analysis) for EMS environments.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of wide-area visualization operator tools
  • Acting as a liaison between EMS support, operations, and engineering functions.
  • Understanding the business functions in order to provide optimal solutions that are scalable, reliable and cost effective.
  • Providing technical leadership for support and planning in the power network applications area.
  • Managing software, including software configuration, and providing system database support; maintaining integration and interfaces between systems.
  • Managing schedules and coordinating changes following established department procedures
  • Providing engineering technical expertise to ensure the operational reliability of SCADA and Real-Time Network Analysis systems
  • Maintaining the EMS dispatching training simulators for transmission and distribution functions
  • Summary of Qualifications

     Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Ability and willingness to travel to company sites, work flexible hours and be available for call-in and after-hours support (7x24 operations) as needed
  • Ability to effectively use standard PC software, including MS Windows and Office products, web-based systems, e-mail, relational database query tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds.
  • Experience in providing responsive and effective customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and plan work, work on multiple concurrent tasks, and meet deadlines.
     
  • Preferred:

  • Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution, generation)
  • Data communications and networking skills/knowledge
  • Previous PNA or network analysis and/or engineering experience
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to effectively resolve technical problems.
  • Familiarity with powerflow applications
  • Familiarity with engineering simulation software
