Program Overview
Norris Academy is a residential treatment facility for children and youth ages 6 to 17 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder/Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Norris Academy has 41 licensed beds and serves youth from Tennessee as well as several other states.

The Autism Spectrum/Neurodevelopmental Disorders Residential Treatment Program at Norris Academy is medically and clinically supervised by a Licensed, Board-Certified Psychiatrist who serves as the Medical Director of the program.

Each shift is staffed with a Registered Nurse 24-hours a day.

Director of Nursing position is an exempt position.

Position Overview

The Director of Nursing oversees the daily operational activities of patient care. The Director of Nursing systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and nursing services, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify opportunities for improving services and patient outcomes. Coordinates staff to assure that effective nursing services are provided. The Director of Nursing (DON) plans and monitors the delivery of quality patient care by the RNs, LPNs and Mental Health Workers. The DON supervises the administration of the work schedule and assigns workload to the staff maximizing the strengths and abilities of the staff. The DON and DCS have overall responsibility for managing, coordinating, supervising and implementing delivery of services in an effective manner for the Child/Adolescent Acute

Job Duties Include:

  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance to assigned staff.
  • Coordinate and maintain the required training and skills of staff.
  • Implement corrective actions and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Effectively address personnel issues in order to promote a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all internal, state, federal and funding policies and procedures.
  • Document and follow-up on status and progress of corrective action and/or development plans while adhering to deadlines.
  • Functions as a Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner in direct patient care as necessary.
  • Job Requirements

  • Registered Nursing degree or Nurse Practitioner degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of four years of verifiable work experience in nursing.
  • The candidate must possess a valid unrestricted Registered Nursing or Nurse Practitioner License issued by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing.
  •  2+ years of psychiatric nursing experience with a child / youth populations is highly preferred.
  •  4+ years of nurse management experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to deliver skilled nursing care in both routine and stressful periods.
  • A valid CPR certification issued by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association is required.  CPR Trainer Certification preferred.
  • Must have current TN driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS and State license guidelines as it relates to programmatic expectations and implementation.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining appropriate medical record documentation
  • Ability to accurately administer medication and monitor side-effects.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships, inter-departmentally, intra-departmentally, and with the medical staff
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate with members of the interdisciplinary treatment team, managed care representatives, patients and families in a clear and concise manner.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations relative to the position.
