Responsibilities:

OVERVIEW:

Serves as primary liaison between the doctor and patient. Responsible for communicating with patients, assessing and evaluating their needs and advising the patients of the recommended actions/course of treatment as directed by the Physician. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

 Responsibilities:

Safety/Risk Management:
a. Acknowledges and maintains the right to privacy and confidentiality.
b. Adheres to departmental policies related to safety, infection control and biohazardous waste.
c. Demonstrates appropriate use and sanitation of equipment.
d. Provides safe environment for self, patient, and other personnel.

Coordination of Services:
a. Identifies work priorities to meet patient and physician needs.
b. Schedules/coordinates tests and procedures as ordered by physician.
c. Ensures completion of ordered tests/procedures for future office visit.
d. Assist with obtaining or development of educational materials.
e. Participate in departmental quality improvement activities.
f. Assists in other office personnel as needed to ensure the timeliness of patient flow.

Complex Aspects:
a. Accurately assesses and identifies patient’s physical, social and emotional needs and outlines a plan of care.
b. Initiates referrals as indicated based on nursing assessment.
c. Identifies abnormal patient symptoms, laboratory findings and notifies physician.
d. Completes initial phone triage and identifies those patients requiring medical attention.
e. Monitors non-licensed personnel to ensure quality of care.

Primary Aspects:
a. Provides initial nursing assessment and identifies patient’s needs and pertinent information.
b. Assists physician as needed during patient visit with physical exam or procedures.
c. Provides education at appropriate level based on patient’s identified needs for learning.
d. Administer medications and treatment as ordered by physician.
e. Order and maintain equipment and supplies required in the department.

Communication Management:
a. Discusses patient’s plan of care and frequency of visits with patient.
b. Communicates results of tests or changes in care when necessary with patient.
c. Provides educational materials as indicated to patient.
d. Communicates critical information to physician in timely manner.
e. Communicates with other members of the healthcare team as indicated.
f. Facilitates communication between physician and patient.
g. Documents patient care, education and results in medical record in concise and timely manner.

Technology:
a. Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of all medical/patient care equipment.
b. Conducts self in professional manner when in patient care area.
c. Accepts responsibility for continued professional development and education.
d. Provide education/orientation to new personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensure: Requires current RN licensure in state of Missouri.
Experience: Minimum of one year med surg experience; prefer two years or more experience.  

Please note the hours for this position are day shift, usually 9 am - 5 pm.  This is a .9 position so you will work 5 days one week, 4 days the next.
