Job Description

The Manager of Accounting is responsible for running the Hospital’s General Accounting Department (the Department). Key responsibilities include accurate and timely financial reporting, general accounting, payroll, and accounts payable. The Manager of Accounting creates an environment that enables Ingalls to fulfill its mission and meet its goals; clearly conveys Ingalls mission to all members of the department; supports and encourages staff to act with appropriate authority over and responsibility for the work; evokes in staff a sense of ownership and accountability for their work stimulating them to continuously improve their performance; and works closely with management and staff throughout the Hospital to answer questions, explain financial reporting, and solve issues as they arise.

 The Manager of Accounting is required to promote and adhere to Ingalls Core Values, Ingalls Missions and the seven Ingalls Performance Standards of Service.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Responsible for monitoring the quality and appropriateness of services within the Department.
  2. Plans, develops, and administers the annual departmental operating and capital budgets to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.
  3. Assists with the preparation of the overall Hospital budget and prepares the annual Hospital budget packet.
  4. In consultation with Human Resources, defines and establishes systems and methods to insure compliance with salary and wage policies and employee benefit plan requirements.
  5. Works with staff to complete the monthly closing cycles in accordance with schedules determined by the Chief Financial Officer and Board of Directors.
  6. Oversees the preparation and filing of quarterly and annual tax returns required by the Internal Revenue Service.
  7. Oversees the preparation and distribution of W-2’s and 1099’s.
  8. Establishes procedures for system operations and effective internal controls.
  9. Provides for training in use of various systems.
  10. Develops procedures for operation of systems and collaborates with Controller to continually improve procedures.
  11. Participates in the resolution of employee and/or vendor complaints within the payroll and accounts payable functions
  12. Provides direct supervision of staff. Defines job functions and responsibilities.
  13. Prepares performance evaluations and provides feedback as the staff works toward departmental and Hospital-wide goals and objectives.
  14. Ensures development and maintenance of policies and procedures for basic functions and performs annual reviews.
  15. Promotes the professional and personnel development of staff via required orientation and ongoing training, staff meetings, joint goal setting, and individual coaching on an ongoing basis.
  16. Directs and participates in the human resource management, coordination, selection, promotion, orientation, and performance appraisal, discipline, and termination processes of reporting staff.
  17. Ensures accurate financial information is provided on a timely basis.
  18. Coordinates external audit and tax work and ensures the efficient and timely completion of such engagements.
  19. Keeps the Controller informed of departmental status of functional, administrative, and budgetary activity.
  20. Acts as liaison for operating departments in budgetary and actual financial reporting and the use of financial reports and methods.
  21. Adapts effectively to organizational and professional change; demonstrates successful working relationships with Department Directors, Department Managers, Vice Presidents, and others
  22. Assists in enhancing productivity and the efficient operation of the Department.
  23. Completes assignments on or before the established completion date.
  24. Uses initiative in asking for additional tasks from the Controller; develops and/or participates in opportunities to work collaboratively with other departments to improve processes and procedures.
  25. Evaluates, defines and recommends systems and methods to insure accurate, timely and effective management reporting.
  26. Utilizes knowledge gained from educational programs in everyday work situations.
Required Skills

Must possess the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of hospital management

Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel and able to work independently in a fast paced environment

Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities as needed

Comfortable with Leadership role and ability to foster change

Job RequirementsRequired Experience

Bachelor degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred.

Minimum of five years in a supervisory role; healthcare experience and/or public accounting experience required
