Job Description


Providence based position to manage product assortment for all categories that comprise Personal Care with heavy focus placed on the Natural Channel. UNFI’s Category Management Department is a key delineation for the company which incorporates fundamental and innovative strategies that will exceed our customer’s needs pertaining to the maximization of sales and profitability at the retail level.



  • Product recommendations to Supplier Management Team in advancing item assortment in UNFI’s distribution centers based on customer business intelligence gained through customer interaction and from intel derived from category review process
  • Preparation in customized formats of national and regional syndicated marketing data for retailers associated to natural and conventional channel
  • Interpretation of consumer shopping patterns leading to effective merchandising assessments and opportunities identified on the shelf based on category specific profiles that may be unique to each channel
  • Building comparative marketing analytics by geographical region based on the natural and conventional channel’s shopping patterns.
  • Assessing the shelf efficiencies of POGs based on the defined metrics of sales and profitability per foot.
  • Assessing store layouts, evaluating aisle adjacencies, and defining destination categories in Personal Care.
  • Identification of the regional sensitivities of a category and their customized applications.
  • Recognition of national and regional impacting trends by channel of a category and their applications to the shelf.
  • Identification of emerging brand opportunities
  • Cleansing applications and re-alignment of regional syndicated marketing data,
  • UNFI’s internal data and customer’s data
  • Expected deliverables to be clearly defined that will be derived from quantitative and qualitative assessments of data resulting in:
  • the identification of retailer’s and distribution center’s opportunity gaps
  • replacement options for proposed discontinued items for retailers
  • the closing of distribution gaps for multi-unit retailers
  • Collaborative work with Space Planner in the development of customized plan-o-grams from category reviews mindful of key UNFI relationships which include Clearvue, Blue Marble, etc.
  • Presenting live webinars that illustrate our Category Review deliverables.
  • Job Requirements



    • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field              

     Required Knowledge:       

    • Excellent understanding of market penetration strategies, market development techniques, and market segmentation strategies, coupled with a high level insight to retailer trends and consumer behaviors.
    • Excellent negotiation and management skills.
    • Strong knowledge and understanding of retail execution and merchandising.

    Experience Required:

    • Five or more years of related business development in category management, sales, purchasing or related fields.
    • Managerial experience is required
    • Experience in managing category relationships with an associated experience in supplier mentoring and training.
    • System implementation experience is preferred
