Job Description

Basic Function:

The primary role of the CAD Designer is to create complex 3D solid models, 2D and 3D component and assembly drawings and renderings through all phases of design, from conceptualization, design, development, and product launch.

The Engineering CAD Designer creates and revised engineering documents to include BOMs, engineering change records, standards, specifications, 3D and 2D models, assembly and detail part drawings, renderings, and illustrations.

Design and documentation challenges could involving modeling large metal cabinet structures, electro-mechanical, electrically or manually activated mechanisms involving metal fabricated and plastic component parts. The designs could be derived from stamping and forming operations, injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, vacuum forming and other common manufacturing processes.

The creation, development and maintenance of product data through CAD, PDM and databases are required. The ability to establish, coordinate and manage project scheduling and tracking for project activities is essential. The ability to cooperate and collaborate closely with all Operations, Sourcing, Accounting, Sales, and Customer Support and Service functions of the organization is essential to success in this role.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work independently and collaboratively with other team members to develop and maintain engineering data for designs for optimum safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Work within the engineering group to meet schedules, and deliverables for projects; maintain tracking for same. Strong emphasis on speed and accuracy.
  • Create and maintain product configurations through BOMs, CAD database, ERP and structured PDM processes
  • Ensures accuracy and completeness of documentation.
  • Collects, reads, interprets and uses related reference documents and drawings prepared by other disciplines, vendors or outside sources.
  • Provide technical support to operations, sourcing, supplier quality, tech service and others.
  • Participate in and practice the Crane Business System (CBS) to include Lean activities and Kaizen events.
  • Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Certification or Associate of Arts or Science Degree in Engineering, Drafting, Design, Applied Technology or related field required.
  • Minimum (5+) years CAD experience with at least three (3) years’ experience in 3D solid modeling involving sheet metal, polymeric, electromechanical, and mechanism designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, realize and execute complex 3D models from sketches, layout geometry, or oral descriptions.
  • Have good working knowledge within CAD drawings as related to:
  • Layer management and usage
  • Drawing scales as they relate to text, dimensions, lines, viewports, etc.
  • Plotting and Plot scales, pen tables, etc.
  • Cross-Sections
  • Profiles
  • Proven ability to effectively use Microsoft Office tools for documentation and presentation.
  • Highly detail oriented and self-motivated..
  • Willingness/ability to assume increased responsibilities when presented.
  • Ability to work as a team player and interact well with others
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Some limited travel may be required

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of SolidWorks as the preferred 3D CAD platform and
