Job Description Overview:

The Commissioning Technical Specialist executes on-site commissioning of material handling systems, including developing and executing test and user acceptance plans, ensuring on-site completion of the project plan, confirming project scope and user acceptance criteria are met, and documenting project follow-up activities.


  • Manages daily activities of on-site commissioning for conveyor systems, automated and semi-automated material handling systems, static and dynamic storage systems, robotic modules, and software integration
  • Develops project testing and user acceptance plans based on engineering design documentation and drawings; plans include resource needs, product needs, subsystem test procedures, and user acceptance criteria
  • Ensures on-going communication with the internal project team throughout commissioning
  • Inspects mechanical installation to ensure that equipment and parts are complete and operational based on engineering plans
  • Inspects and tests Programmable Logic Controllers implementation to ensure automated equipment meets project scope requirements; programs, tests, and adjusts PLCs as needed
  • Collaborates with the project manager and project team to ensure project cost and schedule requirements are met
  • Completes testing to ensure systems are fully functional and meet project scope
  • Ensures user acceptance criteria are met and customer satisfaction is documented
  • Creates a “lessons learned” project summary report, documenting project successes and challenges and recommending commissioning process changes
  • Travels to customer sites up to 80% for up to 3 weeks at a time

  • Qualifications:

  • Combination of training and experience providing required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as Associate’s degree in a mechanical, electrical, or related field with minimum of 5 years of experience in a material handling environment
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley controls/controllers, industrial HMI and SCADA systems, and Siemens, Omron, and Schneider PLCs
  • Ability to program, troubleshoot, and adjust PLC programs
  • Knowledge of AGC Log file analysis
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles and industrial automation
  • Knowledge of safe industrial work practices including Lockout-Tagout and OSHA 10
  • Ability to read and understand system layouts, schematics, and control devices
  • Ability to learn new technologies
  • Computer skills including MS Office; proficient with Excel and Word
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
