Job Description

Job Summary / General Purpose 

General equipment operator capable of a wide range of duties at a bulk/break bulk material handling facility. A variety of skills/specialization may be utilized some of which may require licensure or certification. Work hours/shifts vary and overtime is frequently available but not guaranteed. Work is primarily performed outdoors in a maritime environment 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Operation of front gate and scale house 
  • Participate in facility security plan and periodic drills 
  • Assist with mooring vessels 
  • Assist with vessel loading/unloading operations 
  • Load/unload rail cars & highway tractors 
  • Operation of lift trucks of 3,500-18,000 lbs. capacity with clamp or fork attachments  
  • Operation of light and heavy equipment (loader, bulldozer, rock dump, backhoe, scraper)
  • Operation of tractor trailer rigs including vans and flats
  • Operation of cable crawler cranes and of shipboard winch, derrick, gantry, or hydraulic lifting equipment 
  • Maintenance, service and repair of light and heavy equipment in shop and variety of work sites 
  • Warehousing operations 
  • Assist with maintenance of grounds, buildings and/or equipment
  • Participate in oil spill response drills

  • Education / Experience / Skill Requirements:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Minimum of 2 years experience as a general laborer
    • Knowledge of basic math
    • Mechanical aptitude
    • Licenses/certifications as required for some operations
    • Basic computer knowledge
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Good verbal and written communication skills

    Physical activity/strength requirements are demanding and may include:

  • Standing up to 75% of the day 
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs (i.e. steel parts, spouts) 
  • Carrying up to 50 lbs (i.e. oil, parts, tools) 
  • Pulling up to 75 lb capacity (i.e. mooring lines) 
  • Extended climbing (i.e. tank ladders/stairs/ramps)
  • Incumbent must possess the ability to work in a safe manner and maintain a constant state of alertness as the nature of work performed within our terminal operations create conditions where a momentary lack of concentration or alertness can lead to catastrophic results.
