Job Description

Apex Life Sciences is recruiting for a very experienced analytical chemist to work in a Junior Manager role for a client in Houston, TX. This is a high-level, direct hire position. The selected candidate will lead a team of senior chemists, working with other groups, business units, and locations in a materials science focused organization.

The ideal candidate will have extensive research experience (min. 7+ years) related to materials science and analytical testing, preferably polymeric work; along with at least 3-5 years or more in a leadership role with supervisory/management responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead a small team of 3-5 researchers in various analytical projects & materials testing work to support and drive the development of new products, processes and applications.
  • Build and maintain group of motivated analytical chemists, train and develop their skills & abilities
  • Act as a “player/coach” – lead this group from within and conducting the various testing and research while providing the other members with mentorship and direction; along with managing the operating budgets and all other supervisory-related parts of role
  • Responsible for Health & Safety issues as well as the ensuring all best practices, procedures and analytical methods are continuously followed within the laboratory
  • Provide assistance and work with other company sites, including consulting on analytical-related issues for manufacturing locations
  • Create an environment and culture of strong teamwork and trust amongst all researchers as to ensure their focus is on the group and company’s future
  • Lead group to have a strong safety focused mindset and ultimately achieve and exceed business results expected and set forth by upper level/project management
  • Education, Experience & Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry (preferably Analytical Chemistry), Polymer or Materials Science, or related field
  • Minimum of 5-10 years or more of overall experience working within Analytical Chemistry and/or Materials Science environment in routine testing and also R&D functions
  • Previous leadership experience such as training and mentoring junior chemists, conducting performance reviews, managing budgets, etc. is required. 
  • Expert-level knowledge and experience with various analytical techniques such as chromatography (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, GPC), thermal/material testing (TMA, DMA, DSC, TGA), spectroscopy (mid-IR), titrimetry, and physical properties (Viscosity, RI).
