Job Description

Basic Function:

The primary role of the Mechanical Design Engineer is to create and execute designs and design changes for vending machines through all phases of design, from conceptualization, design, development, and product launch.

Design challenges could include large metal cabinet structures, electro-mechanical, electrically or manually activated mechanisms involving metal fabricated and plastic component parts. The designs could be derived from stamping and forming operations, injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, vacuum forming and other common processes.

The role will require active project management skills, the use of CAD, rapid prototyping and the application of engineering analytical and problem solving tools to create and introduce solutions for manufacturing. The creation, development and maintenance of product data through CAD, PDM and databases are required. The ability to establish, coordinate and manage project scheduling and tracking for project activities is essential. The ability to cooperate and collaborate closely with all Operations, Sourcing, Accounting, Sales, and Customer Support and Service functions of the organization is essential to success in this role.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work independently and collaboratively with other team members to design, develop and maintain vending machines designs for optimum safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Develop cost effective and reliable innovative solutions for new and existing designs.
  • Insure that the technology used in new designs is forward looking and will be accepted in the industry.
  • Work with suppliers and internal stakeholders to identify the critical characteristics that result in reliable cost effective designs that meet customer requirements.
  • Develop and define performance requirements, schedules, and deliverables for projects; maintain tracking for same.
  • Create and maintain product configurations through BOMs and structured PDM processes.
  • Develop, coordinate or conduct product performance testing for a wide range of designs and analyze and interpret the results.
  • Provide technical support to operations, sourcing, supplier quality, tech service and others.
  • Participate in and practice the Crane Business System (CBS) to include Lean activities and Kaizen events.
  • Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a well-rounded background in both plastic and fabricated part design.
  • Minimum seven (7) years engineering experience, with at least four (4) years’ experience in sheet metal, polymeric, electromechanical, and mechanism design.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, realize and execute innovative design solutions.
  • Proven experience with 3D CAD software, AS400 and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to obtain and utilize the results of finite element analysis.
  • Ability to use mold flow analysis for plastic part design.
  • Ability to set up kinematic modeling of mechanisms.
  • An understanding of embedded logic controllers at the input – output level.
  • Ability to conduct a DFMEA analysis and provide cost effective solutions.
  • An understanding of heat – loss calculations and factors influencing it.
  • An understanding of the thermodynamics in a refrigeration process and the factors that influence cooling performance.
  • Some travel may be required
  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficiency in the use of SolidWorks is the preferred 3D CAD platform.
  • Experience with domestic or commercial refrigeration with an appliance company at the Project Leader level is desirable.
  • Multi-disciplinary experience including the combinations of mechanical, electrical and refrigeration engineering is desirable.
  • An Advanced Engineering Degree is desirable.
